Lip Enhancement: Flip or Filler?
Two different treatments that get confused constantly. Here is the honest comparison, including which one will disappoint you.
The comparison
Most people arrive asking for one and leave having chosen the other.
| Botox Lip Flip | Lip Filler | |
|---|---|---|
| What it does | Relaxes the muscle around the upper lip so it rolls slightly outward | Adds physical volume and definition to the lip |
| Adds volume? | No — it changes how much lip shows | Yes |
| Product | Botulinum toxin type A | Hyaluronic acid gel |
| Appointment | About 10 minutes | 30–45 minutes with numbing |
| Visible | 3–5 days | Immediately, settles over 2 weeks |
| Lasts | Up to 3 months | 6–12 months |
| Reversible? | No, but it wears off quickly | Yes — dissolvable |
| Best for | A thin upper lip that disappears when you smile; a gummy smile | Genuinely wanting more volume, better shape or a defined border |
| Trade-off | Subtle. Can slightly affect straw use and enunciation for a week or two | Swelling for a few days; needs restraint to stay natural |

Which one do I actually need?
If your lip is a reasonable size but disappears when you smile, the flip often does what you want. If you want more lip, the flip will disappoint you — that is filler. If you are unsure, the flip is the lower-commitment way to find out, because it wears off in about three months.
Can I have both?
Yes, and some people do — usually filler for shape and a flip for how the upper lip presents when smiling. They are not generally combined at a first appointment.
Why do some lips look obviously done?
Almost always volume, placement and pace. Too much in one sitting, product placed too superficially at the border, or topping up before the last treatment settled. Staged, conservative, staged dosing is the usual defence.
What is the current trend?
Away from volume and towards proportion — smaller amounts, better shape, defined border. It is a shift towards proportion rather than volume.
What age can I have lip filler?
Hyaluronic acid lip fillers are FDA-approved for people aged 21 and over.
